Points to Note When Choosing An Insurance Company For Your Needs

There are many insurance companies out there, hence choosing amongst them can be a real challenge. Here are the main points to keep in mind when selecting an insurance company for your auto insurance and any other general coverage needs :

1. Financial Solidity
You buy insurance to protect you financially and provide peace of mind. Therefore, you should aim to select a company that is likely to be financially sound for many years, by using ratings from independent rating agencies.

2. Licensing
Another consideration is the licensing. Not every insurance company is licensed to operate in each state. As a general rule, you should buy from a company licensed in your state, because you will be able to rely on your state insurance department to help if there’s any issue. To find out which companies are licensed in your state, contact your local state insurance department.

3. Service
Your insurance company and its representatives should answer your questions and handle your claims fairly, efficiently and effectively. You can get a feel for whether this is the case by talking to other customers who have used a particular company or agent.

You may also want to check a national claims database to see what complaint information it has on a company. Also, your state insurance department will be able to tell you if the insurance company you are considering had many consumer complaints about its service relative to the number of policies it sold.

4. Comfort
You should feel comfortable with your insurance purchase, whether you buy it from a local agent, broker, directly from the company over the phone, or over the Internet. Make sure that the agent or company will be easy to reach if you have a question or need to file a claim, if any.

5. Price
Many companies sell insurance policies and prices vary greatly from one to another, so it really pays to shop around. Get at least three different price quotes from companies, agents and from the Internet. Your state insurance department may publish a guide that shows what insurers charge for different policies in various parts of your state.

Auto Insurance Checklist Revisited

Below, we revisit some of the pointers to look out for when deciding on an auto insurance policy :

  1. Determine your state's minimum car insurance requirements.
  2. Consider your own financial situation in relation to the required car insurance and consider buying more to protect yourself and your vehicle.
  3. Review the status of your driving record — do you have any outstanding tickets or points on your driver license?
  4. Make follow-up phone calls to insurance companies to get additional information about the various car insurance coverage.
  5. Inquire about discounts you might qualify for such as a multiple policy discount.
  6. Evaluate the reliability of the auto insurance company you're considering by visiting your state's insurance Web site.
  7. Check your current coverage to find out how much in premiums you are paying.
  8. Get competing quotes from an Internet insurance Web site such as InsWeb.com, YouDecide.com etc.
  9. If you have chosen a new insurance company, remember to cancel your old policy.
Remember to practise due diligence. Save as much as you can by getting a competitive quote but ensure you are comfortable with it and if you can afford it, try to go for a higher insurance coverage rather than just the state minimum.

Auto Insurance Discounts

Some general ways to get discounts on your car insurance are listed below :

Having good credit rating :
Auto insurers have come to believe that drivers with a good overall credit rating are also good insurance risks. You can't apply for this discount directly; your credit standing may be factored into your original rate quotation. The company checks it just as it does your driving record. It's a good idea to periodically check your credit rating and make sure it contains no unfavorable errors. If it does, do what's necessary to remove the unwarranted blemishes.

Being a Safe driver :
If you've had no moving violations or accidents in the past three years, you might be able to reduce your premiums by as much as 40 percent. It never hurts to ask your car insurer for such premium reductions.

Presence of Anti-theft device :
For the most effective security devices — especially engine cutoff switches that prevent a vehicle from starting without the correct key — companies often give a 15 percent discount on your comprehensive coverage. The best devices are built in by manufacturers, so check for these when you are shopping for a new car.

Getting your auto insurance policy with existing insurer :
If one of your potential choices is the company that provides for your homeowner's insurance and other insurance needs, it may offer a 10 to 15 percent break on your auto insurance coverage.

Preferred vehicles :
Several major car insurers now make allowances for specific vehicles and how effective they are at protecting occupants during an accident. State Farm, for instance, cuts rates for personal injury protection coverage for vehicles that best protect occupants in a crash. But because PIP coverage makes up only about 10 percent of your auto insurance premium, owners of preferred vehicles will receive savings of $50 a year or less.

Allstate is also taking a similar approach to PIP. But unlike State Farm, it also takes into account how much damage a vehicle does to other vehicles in a crash. So some large autos, especially SUVs, get a discount for occupant protection offset by an added premium for the extra damage they do, according to Allstate claim records. Owners of minivans and large sedans, however, are likely to get an occupant protection discount with no offsetting damage increase.

Why Should You Have Car Insurance ?

If you are a first time car owner, buying auto insurance must seem like an unnecessary headache in the midst of all the paper work you are already besieged with.

It is certainly not unusual to be anxious about getting yourself car insurance. Buying insurance is like buying any other product. You expect to know what returns you get on your investment. The first time insurance purchaser is uncertain as the investment does not seem to give any tangible returns.

However, this apprehension of making a worthless investment is, in reality, fictitious considering the benefits one stands to gain. The policies that require a vehicle owner to have insurance before bringing out the vehicle in the open is actually in the owner’s best interests. These policies protect your assets and save you the trouble of having lawyers knocking at your door if you have an accident.

Generally, insurance covers the car, the owner and the damages incurred in case of an accident, theft, fire or any kind of mishap. There are various available auto insurance plans that can cover your liabilities and the choice that you make can go a long way in deciding the amount you are annually saving. The minimum requirement varies from state to state and you can always start with this required amount. Yet, having an insurance that covers every possible event shall provide you with a road security.

The question remains, how does one decide on the essential insurance schemes and disregard those which will not prove worthy? The answer to this lies with you. A practical assessment of your driving skills, your residential area and even your age, marital status and gender can make a difference in the expenses. Some basic tips mentioned below might serve as a guide to buying car insurance.

Rate yourself as a driver. If you are inclined to getting parking tickets and violating traffic rules you have to shell out more than a cautious driver. If you live in an area where incidences of car theft are common, it is wise to have a plan that covers such an event. Medical insurance associated with accidents is a good idea too. If you own a beautiful Bentley, it would cost you more in insurance money in contrast to an old and faithful ford model.

In some locations the distance covered plays a major role in deciding the auto insurance policy. So, if you can estimate the number of miles you shall be travelling, you can estimate on the insurance amount. In fact, a prepaid system based on the miles travelled is also obtainable.

Single owners are charged additional amount in premium than married owners. Statistics indicate more accidents occur when men are involved as the distance covered by men is more than women on an average. Keeping this in mind, insurance charges for women is less in comparison to men till a certain age limit. Now, these are some quirky factors that a smart car insurance investor can take advantage of.

That apart, with competitive pricing being the need of the hour, auto insurance companies offer plans that suit almost every kind of financial situation.

1) Do you have an idea that by just calling your insurance company and asking them about how you can file a claim is also recorded in their insurance record? That’s the reason you should always keep your record clean, as far as auto insurance is concerned

2) If you have met with an accident, it does not matter who’s fault it is, as long as you can pay off the damages, then you should go ahead and do without filing for the claim

3) Make a worksheet on what you should do after an accident; this will help you in keeping track of the accident. Find a witness who will be able to give a take on the accident to the car insurance company. If both the parties involved in the accident have a dispute be prepared to get a call from the other party’s insurance company to know your part of the story.

4) If the body of your car is damaged due to the accident. Once the claim is approved, the auto insurance company will then send an adjuster who will come and assess the damage caused.

5) Based on this your claim will be sorted and filed

Claim procedure to be followed :

You must inform your car insurance company as fast as possible after an accident has taken place. When you feel a little alright, it is always good to write how the accident took place in detail for further references. Most of the insurance companies have help lines that operate 24 hours and help you through your procedure. These helplines answer the auto insurance claim FAQ at all times. So before filing for such claims it is always good to make use of these help lines. When you claim for the loss occurred you are supposed to get a form of the accident report.

Car accident claim: Accident claims branches out into the following two :

Simple Claims: For instance you banged your car against a tree in that case no one’s got injured so you do not need to answer any questions. In this case, you just need to get some paper work done and they will estimate the damage and pay off the auto insurance claim.

Difficult Claims: In this case, the fault is at issue, where several vehicles involve themselves or during unusual circumstances surrounding the accident. In such a case, the adjuster just conducts interviews with the people involved in person or phone. They also review photos of the damages or hospital records to collect the information required. Once the adjuster has all the information that he requires then the car insurance claim is further sent for processing and hence the payment.

Insurers evaluate the cost of insurance and the premiums by keeping in mind a variety of meaningful and influential factors.

Factors include : the drivers’ age, though the finest and vital concern is to make the relevant assessment of the risk which one has to pay a claim.

The insurance commissioners stated a report that the average auto insurance cost was dropped by 1 overall and 7percent in the year 2006. The commissions made a list of ten least expensive states reside in while considering the car insurance rate and premium. Keep in mind that insurance cost would work out to be approximately 5percent of the total cost of ownership. One could choose high-end vehicles that would be costing a lot to replace the price when one is looking for higher premiums and also for the privileges.

One could do all the survey by searching over the Internet, and get an opinion about the happenings. get info about the businesses which are selling a majority of auto insurance. One could compare and match the businesses that sell most of the car insurances and could easily use the Internet to compare rates and quotes by browsing the web.

Be viligilant and ensure you get the best quotes as per your pocket strings.

Four Tips For Getting a Great Auto Insurance Deal

Auto insurance advertising is everywhere, from the pages of the daily newspaper, to television and radio commercials. All promises low rates, quick claims handling and personalized attention. But how do you know that you really get the best deal of them all ? What does a smart driver need to know in order to find the best car insurance for their needs ?

Here are four top tips to consider when hunting for a Car Insurance deal :

1. Consider Your Coverage Needs

Before we go headlong into the murky waters of motor vehicle insurance, you must have a basic idea of what you are looking for. At the very least, you must be aware of the minimum coverage imposed by each state. For instance, liability insurance which covers the damage if you are at fault, is required in almost every state. MedPay or PIP, which pays a certain percentage of your medical expenses and lost wages, is another option. Also, one should bear in mind that if you are leasing or financing your car, comprehensive and collision coverage are required as well.

Comprehensive coverage will reimburse you for any damages incurred from incidents such as theft and fire. Collision coverage protects you against damage caused by the impact of another vehicle, running into an obstacle, a telephone pole or other object. If your car is old and / or have already been paid for, you can save a considerable amount of money by choosing not to add on collision and comprehensive coverage. Just be sure to understand that if you are involved in an accident, they are not covered expenses, but rather you will more often than not have to pay for out of your own pocket.

2.Review Your Driving Record

Do you have a history of fender benders? If so, you may be better off with more comprehensive coverage. Have you accumulated a pile of speeding tickets? Consider taking a defensive driving course. Remember that when you apply for car insurance, the company will contact the DMV record for a copy of your driving. In general, car insurance companies are looking at the last 3-5 years, your driver's license history and your premiums based on past accidents and violations.

3. Start Shopping

After deciding on the type of coverage you need and having taken a look at your driving history, you can commence shopping for a good deal. You can do this in person, by phone or via the Internet but do ensure you prepare all the necessary documents. This includes the license, current car insurance policy, your car's VIN, and registration. The idea is to get as many offers as possible, so that you can reach and compare prices side-by-side. Many sites offer their prices against the prices of competitors, which can save you time. Be sure to keep a detailed list of individual companies and their coverage limits, deductibles and rates. Print out a copy of the deals you get online and ask for a fax / email / post a copy of the offers you are given over the phone or in person.

Other things to note if this is your research:

- any discounts offered by the companies such as discounts for students, military discounts, high credit score, safety equipment installed on the car, etc.

- the auto insurance company's rating (for consumers and the ratings groups)

- the company's payment policy (Do they offer automatic deductions from your bank account? Can you make payments online? There is a cancellation fee?)

A good way to ensure you get the best deal is to use a free online auto insurance quoting service. These services often compare quotes from hundreds of different suppliers, and the insurance providers often compete so much so that you end up with a good deal.

4. Your Decision

After you've done all the necessary research, it is time to choose a company. Although it may seem tempting, going with the cheapest car insurance quote may not automatically be the best way to go. Be sure to choose the coverage that is sufficient for your needs and that the level of service is decent and reliable. Getting the best deal in auto insurance has little to do with catchy jingles and funny commercials. By taking some time to do some research, you can save hundreds of dollars a year and still maintain the level of coverage you need with a reliable company.

What you need to do is to look at the car insurance price quotes from different companies to have a better view of what is the best deal available for you. Most often that not, price quotes are just available online so you do not have to search that hard.

Getting auto insurance price quotes is very essential. Of course, you also have to look at the benefits the car insurance package can offer to you. Otherwise, you might end up purchasing something you may not require.

Comparing prices is important but the bottomline is to find a package that covers all the things that you are looking out for. Just practice due diligence and you will do alright.

What is Covered in a Basic Car Insurance Policy

There are basically 6 types of car insurance coverage :

Bodily Injury Liability

This coverage applies to injuries that you, the designated driver or the policyholder, cause to someone else. You and family members listed on the policy are also covered when driving someone else’s car with their permission.

It is important to have enough liability insurance, because if you are involved in a serious accident, you may be sued for a large sum of money. Do consider purchasing an auto insurance policy that is more than the state-required minimum to protect assets such as your home and savings.

Medical Payments or Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

This coverage pays for the treatment of injuries to the driver and passengers of the policyholder's vehicle. At its broadest, PIP can cover medical payments, lost wages and the cost of replacing services normally performed by someone injured in an auto accident. It may also cover funeral costs.

Property Damage Liability

This car insurance coverage pays for damage that you (or someone driving the car with your permission) may cause to someone else's property. Usually, this means damage to someone else’s car, but it also includes damage to lamp posts, fences, buildings or other structural property that your car hit.

Collision

This coverage pays for damage to your car resulting from a collision with another car, object or as a result of flipping over.

It also covers damage caused by potholes. Collision coverage is generally sold with a deductible of $250 to $1,000, and the higher your deductible, the lower your premium. Even if you are at fault for the accident, your collision coverage will reimburse you for the costs of repairing your car, minus the deductible. If you're not at fault, your auto insurance company may try to recover the amount they paid you from the other driver’s car insurance company.

If auto insurance company is successful in recovering the amount, you'll also be reimbursed for the deductible as well.

Comprehensive

This car insurance coverage reimburses you for loss due to theft or damage caused by something other than a collision with another car or object, such as falling objects, fire, missiles, explosion, earthquake, vandalism, windstorm, hail, flood, riot, or contact with animals such as birds etc.

Comprehensive auto insurance is usually sold with a $100 to $300 deductible, though you may want to opt for a higher deductible as a way of lowering your premium.

Comprehensive car insurance will also reimburse you if your windshield is cracked or shattered. Some companies offer glass coverage with or without a deductible.

Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage

This coverage will reimburse you, a member of your family, or a designated driver if one of you is hit by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver.

Underinsured motorist coverage comes into play when an at-fault driver has insufficient auto insurance to pay for your total loss. This coverage will also protect you if you are hit as a pedestrian.

Check out which car insurance policy suits you the best and your budget and be equipped with one that suits your lifestyle. It is best that you get adequately insured to protect your interests.

Auto Insurance Checklist 2009

Looking for a comprehensive auto insurance for the coming year ? Below is a list that you may find useful when hunting for a good car insurance deal. Now is especially a good time as during the Nov/Dec period where insurance premiums tend to be very competitive as insurance agents want to close more sales before the end of the year. Furthermore, many people will tend to have received their bonus package by year end and will have more money to spend.

Now, the price you pay for your car insurance varies depending on your driving record, the type of car you have and the insurance company you buy your auto insurance policy from.

Here is a list of things you may like to do to save you some money.

1. Look Around and Request for Car Insurance Quotes

Get at least three to five auto insurance quotes. You can call companies directly or access information on the Internet with the aid of Google or Yahoo search. Or simply use your local Yellow Pages and you will easily be able to find the contact details of quite a number of reputable car insurance companies and their agents.

In any case, do get quotes from different types of insurance companies. Some sell through their own agents whilst others sell through independent agents who offer policies from several insurance companies. Other companies, on the hand, sell directly to consumers over the phone or via the Internet. The price varies depending on the sales method used.

However, it is advisable not to shop soley by price alone. You want a reputable company that answers your questions and handles car insurance claims fairly and efficiently, on top of being reliable.

Other sources for finding the right kind of insurance company include : word of mouth from family, friends and associates, as well as your state insurance department, where you can find consumer complaint ratios by company.

2. Compare Auto Insurance Costs Before You Purchase a Vehicle

Your insurance premium is based in part on the vehicle's listed price, the cost to repair it, its overall safety record and the likelihood of theft.

Many insurers offer discounts for features that reduce the risk of injuries or theft, such as air bags, daytime running lights, anti-theft devices, anti-lock brakes etc. Note that expensive cars that are favourite targets for thieves cost more to insure.

3. Buy your Auto and Homeowners Insurance Coverage from the Same Insurer

Many insurers will give you a discount if you buy two or more types of insurance from them.

Also, you may get a reduction if you have more than one vehicle insured with the same company. Some insurers reduce insurance premiums for long-time customers.

Make sure you do your maths and shop around carefully; you may still be able to save more money buying from a different insurance company even with the multi-policy discount.

4. Ask for a Higher Deductable

Your deductible is the amount of money you pay out-of-pocket before your insurance policy kicks in. By requesting higher deductibles, you can lower your costs substantially.

For example, increasing your deductible from $200 to $500 could reduce your collision and comprehensive coverage premium by 15 to 30 percent. Going to a $1,000 deductible can save you 40 percent or more.

However, keep in mind that you'll need to have the amount of the deductible on hand should something happen to your vehicle.

5. Reduce Auto Insurance Coverage in Older Cars

Consider dropping collision and/or comprehensive coverage on older cars.

It may not be cost-effective to continue insuring cars worth less than 10 times the amount you would pay for coverage. Any car insurance claim payment you receive would not substantially exceed your premiums minus the deductible. Claims occur on average only once every 11 or 12 years.

Auto insurance dealers and banks can tell you the worth of a car.

6. Inquire about Group Insurance when looking for Car Insurance Policies

You may be eligible to get insurance through a group plan from your employer, or through professional, business and alumni groups or other associations. Group plans often provide substantial discounts on insurance.

Ask your employer, or any groups or clubs of which you are a member, about this option.

7. Low-Mileage Discounts On Your Auto Insurance

Some companies offer discounts to motorists who drive a lower than average number of miles per year.

Low mileage discounts can also apply to drivers who car-pool to work.

8. Maintain Good Credit Records May Lower Your Car Insurance Premium

Your credit rating may affect what you pay for your auto insurance, so monitor it carefully.

You can get this information directly from the three major credit-rating agencies (Trans Union, Equifax and Experian). There are also various Web sites that allow you to check your credit rating and provide tips on how to improve your score.

9. Seek out Safe Driver Discounts when Applying for Car Insurance

Most insurance companies offer discounts to policyholders who have not had any accidents or moving violations for a number of years.

You may also qualify for a cut if you have recently taken a defensive driving course, if you are over 50 and retired, or if there is a young driver on the policy who is a good student, has taken a drivers education course or is away at a college, generally at least 100 miles away.

When you comparison shop, be sure to inquire about discounts for the following (availability will vary according to the state and company) :

  • Defensive driving course
  • No accidents in 3 years
  • No moving violations in 3 years
  • $500 deductible
  • $1,000 deductible
  • Student drivers with good grades
  • College students away from home
  • Daytime running lights
  • Low annual mileage
  • Drivers over 50 to 55 years of age
  • Driver training course
  • Air bags
  • Anti-lock brakes
  • Anti-theft device
  • More than one car insured with the same company
  • Auto and homeowners coverage with the same company
  • Customer with insurance company for a long time

Do remember that the key to savings is not the discounts but the final price. A company that offers few discounts may still have a lower overall price. Getting a car insurance is compulsory before you can drive on the road. Do your maths carefully and work out the best and most affordable auto insurance plan that suits your needs and comfort, complete with a good customer service support.

To conclude : The bottomline is to drive carefully and safely and not to put your life, your passengers and your vehicle at any risk.
